Destruction of Explosives

FCD specialises in the safe destruction of all kinds of explosives, in whatever condition:

  • Redundant, damaged, or expired explosives
  • Military munitions and ordnance
  • Improvised explosive devices
  • Damaged detonators and explosive accessories

Services include:

  • On-site inspection and removal, including scheduled collections from mines
  • Inspection and clearing of dedicated old explosives boxes on site
  • Secure storage in licensed magazines
  • Destruction by detonation or burning at approved facilities
  • Full records and a destruction certificate declaring the types and quantities processed

All handling and destruction is carried out by competent, registered personnel in accordance with FCD procedures and the Explosives Act and Regulations.

Transportation of Explosives

FCD is registered with the Chief Inspector of Explosives to transport explosives of any kind. We operate four licensed explosives transport vehicles, and all drivers are certified in accordance with the Dangerous Goods requirements of the Road Traffic Act.

Our transport services include:

  • Collection of old, redundant and damaged explosives directly from client sites
  • Scheduled, recurring collections for mines and other ongoing operations
  • Safe transport of damaged detonators and sensitive explosive accessories in line with strict FCD procedures
  • Delivery to our licensed magazines for secure storage, or directly to our approved destruction area

Every load is handled by trained, registered personnel, so explosives stay secure and compliant from collection through to final destruction.

Environmental Compliance

Every destruction FCD carries out is managed to prevent harm to the environment. Our approach includes:

  • An approved destruction area where smoke, dust and ejected material are sampled daily for analysis
  • Complete destruction, with no undestroyed explosives left behind
  • Safe handling of leftover ash and metal particles to prevent contamination
  • Recycling of residual materials through registered recycling companies
  • Burning operations conducted in line with environmental legislation

Our monitoring has never recorded an exceedance of the legal limits for smoke and emissions.

Training

Training is delivered in collaboration with accredited providers and includes:

  • Explosives legislation and compliance
  • Magazine Master certification
  • Explosives control at delivery bays
  • Safe handling and identification of explosives

Airbag Destruction

FCD safely removes and destroys old, redundant and faulty motor vehicle airbags. We are registered with the Chief Inspector of Explosives to transport and destroy explosives. Airbags can be held in our licensed explosives magazines before destruction at our approved destruction area. Residual materials are recycled through registered recycling companies.

How it works:

  1. Request a quotation from FCD in writing.
  2. Once the quotation is accepted, issue an official purchase order.
  3. FCD arranges the collection and removal of the airbags.
  4. After destruction, you receive a Destruction Certificate stating the quantities destroyed.

Removal and Recycling of Used Empty Explosives Packaging

Explosives regulations require that boxes, cartons and bags that have contained explosives are never used again. FCD provides scheduled removal of empty explosives packaging, including:

  • Carton boxes, plastic bags and paper bags
  • Carton, wooden, plastic and metal reels used for detonating fuse, igniter cord and shock tube

Both inner and outer packaging is checked to confirm it is free of explosives. It is then destroyed by burning, or, where permitted by the Chief Inspector of Explosives, recycled through registered recycling companies.
